Helpful Hints from our regular travelers

  • Ski season is generally June to October
  • Check weather conditions as  storms can make skiing unpleasant or even impossible. For this reason booking your hotel accommodation at the last minute makes good sense.
  • Make sure your flight and accommodation has been confirmed.
  • Snow clothing, like weather proof padded pants are often the best choice for skiing. Also consider layers like  wool or cotton underwear to keep you warm and cozy. Bring a change of clothing, since you may get wet.
  • Sunscreen and lip balm! slap it on thick and constantly when on the slopes even if the weather is cloudy.
  • Skiing is a physically challenging sport so if you are out of shape consider an exercise program working the leg muscles and getting aerobic fitness levels up.

Once on the slopes, the best place to go for first time skiers is to the beginners slopes and enrolling in a group or one-on-one ski lesson. You will learn to ski a lot quicker and it’s always lots of fun. The biggest benefits of these lessons is that you are learning from a qualified instructor, in safe surroundings.  Too many of us attempt to head straight for the slopes without a basic lesson and end up frustrated and sore. Never to return.

Etiquette and rules on the ski slopes:

Like any other mass participation sport, there are general rules of behaviour to keep in mind. They of course all tend to revolve around consideration for others.

  • Respect those on the slopes with lesser ability. That was once you. So give them plenty of space.
  • Remember that a skier in front of you has the right of way. Whether you’re crossing a trail, making a turn, or stopping, remember that it’s “your” responsibility to avoid the skier in front of you.
  • Never Ski on closed runs, ever. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas. The barrier is there for a good reason and generally that is safety.
  • If you're passing another skier, call out which side you will be passing them on.
  • Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects, so keep your speed in check. No-one likes a lunatic speed demon. Especially one out of control. If you feel everyone around you is a hindrance, then you’re probably on the wrong slope. Ski on trails that match your ability. Check later in this article for references to skill level indicators.
  • Don't stop abruptly in the middle of the trail instead move cautiously to the side of the run. While being aware of those approach from uphill.

Before making that final decision read up on the hotel reviews available on the web as this gives unbiased feedback on the accommodation provider. If the whole family is going you may want to consider the offerings from serviced apartments for a comparison. These also have kitchens with cooking facilities which can provide further cost saving.

All this s available of our website, including great deals on other Queenstown hotels, motels and accommodation providers.
